It's a funny thing how from time to time I will hear a pastor talk down about effort or striving like it's a waste of time but is it?  Does the scripture really say that or is that only part of the story.

I am called to press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14

We are called throw off everything that hinders and run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Hebrews 12:1,2

Run in such a way as to get the prize. 1 Co 9:24

When I read the scripture I am given instructions as a father and as a husband and as a Christian.  If I was not to strive for these things I would not be told to do them.

Let us not become weary in doing good. Galatians 6:9

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial...James 1:12

If you want to thrive then you have to strive.  Can you overwork?  Sure and that is part of what Rhythm is about.  Placing in your life the activities, the cadence and the intensity that leads to a healthy plant (you) for God to trim.

“For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.” 2Pe 1:5-7

We are participants in this life.  We are not here for our own benefit though we are told to store up treasures in heaven.

There are many interests that I have that I know would just serve to distract me from my life mission.

This topic is very interesting when I consider how people thrive is abundance and thrive in desolation.  As much as I want to have the best of everything and do all of the fun things I also wish to show up delivering the goods when I stand before the King.

Let's develop the habits that will allow us to stay on an upward trajectory and display His goodness, faith and character.  Let us shine like lights in a dark world.
